Fresh Cut Flowers
I used to not care much for flowers.
My parents would send me a bouquet on my birthday, and I always viewed them as something cursory, like saying “bless you” after a sneeze. My mom, on the other hand, has the ultimate green thumb. For as long as I can remember, she has delighted in flowers and gardening, and scolded my father whenever he got a bouquet of dreaded carnations.
Last summer was personally challenging. I was back living with my parents, waiting to start business school, not really sure of my place in the world. While grocery shopping at Trader Joe’s, I was drawn to the colorful bouquets. Knowing how much my mom loved flowers, I added one to my grocery cart. I was so happy to see the delight on her face when she came home and saw them, that I decided to make it a weekly habit for her.
When I moved to Chicago for school, I decided to keep the habit of buying flowers. At first it was to remind myself of the happiness my mom felt, but now it’s become a ritual I perform for myself.
I love letting the colors dictate which bouquet to buy, and the selections at Trader Joe’s make the grocery shopping experience feel like less of a chore!
What about you? Where’s your favorite place to buy flowers?
